Everyone has done the all nighters to study for an exam or just burning the midnight oil for the fun of it. However, when a teenager begins this habitual sleep deprivation schedule it can actually hurt them both emotionally and academically. Back in the days when the only means of communication was a Bell Canada land line phone. Technology has opened a plethora of opportunities for teenagers to communicate with their friends without having to pick up a phone. In the 70s and 80s it was easy for us to shut the lights and get to bed. If we wanted to communicate or entertain ourselves we actually had to go to our friends or meet at mall or library. We would spend our time walking most of the time. There was no other form of communication back in the 70s and early 80s. You actually had to commute to spend time with friends or use the phone to call them. However the phone was not a very private form of communication so most of us preferred to spend time with our friends either at their homes or some other venue. Communication stopped at around 9:00 or 10:00 P.M. and if you were still on a call with your friend you would be certain your parents would be on the other line to end the call. Thinking of watching T.V. during the weekdays after 10 P.M.? That was never going to happen. The T.V. most likely would have disrupted your parents or other siblings. So what did we do to wind down? We read books or magazines.
Then came the mass Computer desktop market in the late 80s and early 90s. Wow! We have another form of communication? E-MAIL? Yes email. Since the time people learned they can communicate through a computer using E-MAIL it started changing the way we communicate. Than we learned to voice our opinions on the internet. Wow a way to say something without people looking at you! During the early 90s cell phones started becoming more popular and the cell phone market started booming. in the early 90s it was really only one parent that may have had a cell phone. During the late 90s cell phones started becoming more popular amongst teenagers and every teenager wanted one. Than social media came along like facebook, twitter and we hit a new age of communication. Later we hit the millennium companies started producing tablets like candy bars.
Now we are in the age of teenagers multitasking multiple devices at once. We have kids playing xbox, tablet, and going on the computer within the same hour. It used to be rare back in the 80s to see a T.V. in a teenagers room. Now these teenagers have access to multiple devices and yes they are in the room where they should be relaxing and sleeping. Teenagers rarely sit in front of the T.V. to watch a movie any-more. This devices have caused a phenomenon we know as sleep deprivation in teenagers. Not to mention they have been know to strain neck muscles and sometimes as adults they require surgery.
Strategies to help teenagers overcome their technology induced sleep deprivation.
- Start with having your child not bring any devices on their bed this included and tablets. The bed is meant for rest and sleep and what you are telling the brain that the bed is also used for other things besides sleep.
- Create a daily limit by using a some type of schedule. This includes cell phones.
- Try slowly removing devices away from the room. Start With the T.V. or video game consoles. Than gradually move towards the other technology objects.
- Your child should not be watching any devices an hour before they go to sleep.
- An hour before they go to sleep they should be in a room with dim light reading a book or magazine. Bright light in a room also signals to the brain it is still daylight and the circadian rhythm gets confused. A circadian Rhythm is analogous to a biological clock in your brain telling your brain and body it either time to rest or be awake. If you feed it more light, you are essentially rewinding the clock back to its daytime hours which will cause sleep deprivation.
What essentially you are trying to do is let your brain and body know it is time to wind down and your circadian rhythm will alert start working properly.

Steps to take when your child is depressed
One of the hardest things to swallow is when your own child is not feeling themselves. You notice a small or large change in their mood, behaviour patterns, and daily activity which points towards some type of depression. Your hope is that it is a temporary condition brought on by something that may have triggered the way they feel. Many teenage boys start to develop mood related symptoms around the age of 13 or 14. Many Teenage girls may develop mood related symptoms of depression around the age of 12. The reason is that their body and hormones are changing and this may cause a decrease in serotonin which can adversely affect the way they feel. Their minds start getting confused in regards to what they are feeling. They will often blame others or even their own parents for the way they are currently feeling. It is extremely important that you take action early before it escalates into a serious condition that may require hospitalization and medication.
The stigma regarding mental illness is out there. According to The journal of psychiatric Services 45% of people out there have a stigma regarding mental illness. They feel that they would be rejected by their peers if they were to find out that they have a mental health diagnosis. This stigma does not assist those seeking help as they may get ignored or shamed by others. It is also very difficult for a parent to realize their child is experiencing mental health issues. Parents will often blame themselves for the way their child feels. They may feel that they should have given more attention to their child or have given them material items to make them more happy. There is no correlation between how much time you spend with your child or the monetary items you give them and depression. Parent’s must realize that their child may be suffering from a mental illness and they need to find the best ways to help their child the best way they can.
Child Or Teenage Anxiety and Depression – Early Intervention
You notice your child is not acting like their usual self. You may notice the following behaviour and patterns in your child.
- Erratic sleep patterns – Your child may take a long time to get to sleep; They may sleep very little or way too much; Gets up a lot in the middle of the night; May have frequent nightmares
- Loss of appetite or an increase in appetite, may or not be associated with stomach pains
- Feeling nauseous before attending school or an event
- withdrawal from friends and/or family
- Loss of motivation in school work or homework
- Loss of motivation or withdrawal from day to day activities. For example they are not interested in going outside for walk, watching T.V., playing video games, or playing
- Withdrawal from friends or family. They seem to be wanting to be left alone. They do not want to talk much to you or others.
If you notice the above symptoms it is important to try and find the root of the problem. This is the time to spend a significant amount of time with your child. Talk to them and they may reveal what is bothering them that may be causing their temporary symptoms. If they are not talking to you try to find a relative or someone else in the household that can speak to them and find out what is bothering them. It is common that children of this age would rather talk to someone else about what they are experiencing instead of their own parents. They feel their parents may over react to what they have to say. Once you find out what is bothering reassure your child that you are there for them and they are not alone. As a parent you need to remain calm and positive and never place the blame on the child for the way they feel.
If it is a school bullying issue, you need to make sure that a report is issued to the school regarding the bullying and accompanying medical documentation indicating that your child is having a medical condition because of harassment within the school. If the school receives the report they will act fast to resolve the issue and make sure your child feels safe at school or may make course or classroom changes to ensure that the bullying stops.
If it is another issue, that you feel you can help your child. You need to work on solving those issues with your child. It may be as simple as your child saying that they feel overwhelmed with school work and need to take a break from school work.
If it is a fear, or phobia your child is experiencing than a psychotherapist may help using cognitive behaviour therapy.
It is important that if the symptoms persist longer than 2 weeks in length that your doctor is notified as they can conduct a series of blood tests to find out if there is anything physically wrong that may be causing your child’s symptoms. There could be a lack of vitamen B12, D, TSH overstimulation etc.. that can be solved with medical therapy.
Things to Do, While your child is experiencing anxiety and depression
- Change your child’s diet, make sure that your child is getting well balanced meals. Try to avoid foods or wean them off the foods that do not contain much nutrients such as pizza and fries. Your child may be craving these foods because these foods give them that good feeling. However, these fast foods may be detrimental to your child’s physical and mental health well being. Check with your local doctor about giving your child vitamins.
- Start going for brisk walks with your child. Any physical activity increases the serotonin levels in your body, which will help your child feel better. It also gives you and opportunity to talk with your child. There are no excuses to keep your child sedentary because you feel it is too cold to go out for a brisk walk. Rain or shine, put on your boots, raincoat, and/or winter paraphernalia and go for a walk with your child. These walks could be about 15 minutes to begin with twice a day and increase them to half an hour. The walks are healthy for you too. If it is negative 40 out there go to a mall and walk around the mall. It is important that your child gets some physical activity everyday.
- Have your child join a physical education or cultural program either at your nearest community centre or privately run courses or agencies.
- Go out with your child. Go to a mall, museum, recreation centre, movie, or park. Changing the scenery by going out may help your child focus on something else rather than their worries or thoughts.
- If it is not possible to go on an outing, spend some time with your child at home. Tell them you want to watch a show or movie at home with them and you will bring the popcorn and treats.
- Try to limit the use of electronics such as video games, social media, and the internet. These types of media may actually be aggravating how they are experiencing since they may be receiving some sort of bullying through social media.

Family Oriented Activities for Kids during the March Break, Winter or Xmas break, or Summer Break in Toronto and the GTA
Many parents find themselves taking off work for a week or two to spend time with their kids during march break, winter break, or summer break. Some parents are left with their notebook in hand and find themselves writing a plan for the week or two ahead. It is a good idea to plan ahead so that you are prepared to keep your kids busy during long or extended breaks without placing them in a camp. A good idea for all families is to purchase a membership to the many attractions we have here in Toronto. Memberships are only useful if a family visits the attraction a minimum of four or five times to make up the value of the cost of the memberships. If memberships are not for you then going the one time is also effective.
1. Pioneer Village membership for $95 is an option. There are many events prepared by pioneer village during march break which accommodate the large influx of march breakers to their site. Families can also purchase a TRCA parks membership. The cost for 2015 is $135. This includes free admission to pioneer village,Albion Hills, Boyd, Bruce’s Mill, Glen Haffy, Heart Lake, Petticoat Creek, as well as Black Creek Pioneer Village and Kortright Centre. 2. Ontario Science Centre memberships is $80 for the silver membership and $140 for the gold membership. The difference between the two memberships is that the silver offers parking for $5 and the gold parking is free. The other difference is silver gives you a discount for the imax movies of half price. With the gold membership the imax movies are free. If you are just there to keep the kids busy the $80 for the silver membership is more than enough. If you want the movies and parking for free than the additional $60 is worth the extra cost. As I mentioned before these memberships are valuable if you plan to visit the science centre for at least 5 visits.
3. The metro Toronto Zoo is another family oriented place for the kids. During the summer they have a splash park, so if you bring you swim suits this is all free with admission. The metro Toronto Zoo membership is also valuable if you plan on visiting at least 3 times. The membership fee is $195. With the membership you also have the benefit of going on the free zoo-mobile rides. This is great to use at the end or beginning of your visit. The thing I like most about the zoo is the walking. Walking a few of those routes is a healthy family oriented visit. They have plenty of picnic benches and we bring our own food to save a few dollars here and there.
4. Canada’s Wonderland Memberships. Individual passes are only worth the price if you are only visiting one time. They cost around $40 but you can get discount coupons at Shoppers Drug Mart and some other stores. I would add the fast lane as an additional cost. Fast lane only works on certain rides and is not applicable to children rides. A membership will cost you $70 if you buy your membership early. If not it can cost you as much as $80 after early bird prices. Prices for young children lower than a certain height will cost you $60. We have found that Wonderland is getting extremely busy these days. In the summer of 2014 most of the time we had to wait long times for the rides. The best times to go when you have a membership is when the forecast calls for rain. If it does rain most of the day and tapers off near the end of the day than most likely there will be fewer people in the evening or during the day. Evening or very early in the morning are the best times to go during the weekdays. During the weekend is extremely busy. You can also settle for the water park in wonderland to cool off in the wave pool.
5. Centerville or Centre Island memberships. There are memberships available for $75.00. Plus the addition of the ferry-boat ride for $7.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. Not sure if you can get a membership for the ferry boats but it is worth inquiring. One thing you have to take into account if you are not taking the TTC is parking. Parking can be expensive for the day but worth it if you are going to take the whole family anyway. The rides are not wonderland but more oriented towards kids. They also a farm. Great for kids who want to see the farm animals.
6. Royal Ontario Museum Memberships. The membership fee for a family is $100. I would have to say that this is a great indoor event for the family. There are many museum programs for kids that the whole family can enjoy. Even without the kids programs there are many things to see in the museum. Just like any other membership if you are planning to got at least four times the entire year that it is worth your money.
7. Other places to visit with the kids . Edwards Gardens – (FREE) . Hockey Hall of Fame . Art Gallery of Ontario, St. Lawrence Market – (FREE), Ripley’s Aquarium Of Canada, and High park are all great once a year visits but may not be valuable as a membership.

Should Parents Regulate Screen Time?
Are your children spending to much screen time?
Many parents are faced with the dilemma of screen time for their children. Some parents have developed a weekend only screen time usage. This has to be implemented early as it is hard to take away their screen time if you have allowed it on the weekdays. You can also limit screen time per day to a maximum of one hour. I believe parents should regulate the screen time of their children Otherwise your children may start a battle with you if change the rules after you have realized they are using up way to much screen time during the week. What do we mean by screen time. I would say anything that has a screen. That would be TV, computer, Tablet, and cell phone.
The problem is now a days our cell phones have video and WIFI capabilities so our children really do not need to be in front of a TV, computer, or tablet to receive their screen entertainment. Times have changed since my generation where our screen time was TV and that got boring so you headed to your nearby park and played with your friends for hours.
Gone are the days you see kids playing street hockey or baseball on their own without a rep team or organization. That is why many parents send their kids to extracurricular activities just so they do not go on their tablet.
It used to be that students had about 1 to 2 hours of homework per day which did not allow them much screen time. Now a days the only homework they will be getting is the work they did not finish in class. I Believe less homework has caused children to have no alternative but to use screen time as a means of not being bored at home. What happened with a good conversation with our friends. Now your conversations are limited to quick back and forth texts.

How to motivate you child to read and write.
Many parents call our tutoring agency asking for a reading program for their child. There are many things parents can do to motivate their children to read. One thing parents can do is simply take their children to the library once a week and call that library time. Many parents are busy placing their children in physical activities forget that the library also offers certain reading programs or events to help motivate your child. As your child gets older you can simply call this your weekly “reading night” or “reading day”. You and your child will benefit from this as this also serves as a relaxing event you can do with your child. Even if you miss a library date. You can substitute that with a “reading night” at your home. Be sure to be consistent as any long lapse from reading every week with your child can backfire. It is very beneficial to start that “reading bond” with your child at an early age. The older they are the more difficult it will be to motivate them to become avid readers. Once your child gets used to reading on a weekly basis they will continue reading for the love of it. As past experience tells me my students that were avid readers were also performing well in all academic areas including arithmetic. I cannot stress how important it is to read to your child when they are young. It does not matter what language you read to them. Once they see how much you love reading to them they will in turn love reading because it comforts them. And as adults and teens they will remember that time you spent with them reading.
